What Is the Role of Parents in ABA Therapy?

July 28, 2022

Children with autism deserve attention and a different approach to help them achieve their goals. They can improve their communication, behavioral, and social skills by participating in ABA therapy. Many parents of children with autism want to know how they can help and their role in ABA therapy.

Parents play a significant role in ensuring their child progresses and retains the information and lessons learned during therapy sessions. Parents participating in ABA training can support their child's success by encouraging the same tasks at home.

Preventing Skill Regression

Parents can help their children succeed by using the same lessons from a therapy session at home. No matter where a child learns social skills, you should help them maintain these skills. By retaining these behaviors or skills, your child can use them in future scenarios.

If you don't allow your child to practice these skills, they may regress or forget how to do certain things. Practicing simple behavioral and social skills with your child daily in different scenarios is essential.

Supporting Educational Success

Celebrate the small and big wins. Parents participating in ABA training can support their child's educational success. Parents can also help implement behavioral strategies that can improve their academic performance.

Participating in ABA therapy can help your child by assisting them in completing their homework if it's tough. You can also inform school teachers about different educational strategies that help your child.

Introducing and Encouraging "New" Skills

Parents can play a role in ABA therapy by practicing universal skills in new or unfamiliar settings. Your child can develop their social skills when you introduce them to new environments. For example, a child who learns math at school should be able to perform those same skills at home or in a restaurant.

You can support your child by learning new methods or strategies to help them succeed in unfamiliar settings.

Understanding Your Child on a New Level

Parents participating in ABA training will better understand their children and learn more about them. By understanding your child better, you can also improve your relationship with your child. You will be able to explore their interests and know how they retain information. Thus, you can create and implement strategies that work best for them and their learning style.

We understand parenting puts a lot on your plate. However, your participation is critical when it comes to ABA therapy. HANDS Center for Autism offers parent education for autism to help parents encourage the development of their child's communication and self-help skills. When parents are active in these sessions, the child is more likely to succeed.
